Dear First Grade Families,

     Welcome to First Grade.  I am so excited that you have chosen to visit my web page!  This website is designed so that I can share what's happening in my classroom with my students families and friends.  As you explore this site you will find our daily schedule, read about special events and learning that is taking place in our classroom.  You will be able to find out about Announcements in our classroom, Math and Reading skills being taught for the month, and using the links to explore several interesting websites.  If you need to reach me please call me at school or you can e-mail me.   The number at the school is 570-655-2146 and my e-mail address is kswitzer@wyomingarea.org.

  • Your child will have a Green "Take Home Folder" to carry daily work home.  Daily work should be reviewed each night.  The folder should be emptied and returned the following day.  
  • Breakfast is $1.25 and reduced is $.30.  It starts at 8:20 - 8:40 a.m.
  • Lunch is $2.10 and reduced is $.40 or your child may carry his or her own lunch. You can purchase milk for $.55 cents.
  • Students should arrive between 8:20 to 8:45 a.m.  Your child will be marked tardy after 8:45 a.m.  Dismissal is 3:10 p.m. for bus students and 3:15 p.m. for walkers.
  • Bus students will exit at dismissal from the left side of the building.  Walkers will be dismissed from the front door of the school.  If you are picking up you child, please wait in front of the school.  Please send a note if your child has a change at dismissal time.
  • We order from Scholastic Book Club throughout the year.  Your child is under no obligation to order books.  If you are paying by a check, please make the check out to Scholastic.
  • If your child is absent from school I will make every attempt to send home the missed work with the child listed on the homework buddy form you filled out at the beginning of the school year.  Also you can call the school and pick it up.
  • An excuse for any absence is excepted to be brought to school when your child returns.

READING - Students should practice orally any words on cut and paste papers and vocabulary flash cards sent home for every story each week. 

 

Students should review all papers sent home each night.  There will also be phonics books sent home each week with a pink slip attached.  Please fill out the slip after your child has read the book and return it to school the next day.

 

Vocabulary tests are given at the end of each story.  Theme vocabulary tests after each theme ends.  Skills tests are given on Day #5 of each story.  Theme tests are given after a theme has been completed.  There are 10 themes that will be covered in Reading this year.  The students will also be writing several writing pieces in school.  Please watch your child's homework folder for those writing pieces to be sent home to practice.

 

SPELLING AND ENGLISH - This will be added to the curriculum at the beginning of the second marking period.  Students will need to learn 10 spelling words each week.  Homework will be once a week along with a spelling test at the end of each story.  Also English tests will be given every week.   Mistakes will be corrected for spelling, end marks, and starting a sentence with a capital letter.

 

MATH - Practice papers will be sent home marked HW in the right corner.  Please return the completed paper to school the next day. 

 

There are 19 Chapters that will be covered in Math this year.  We will have quizzes and tests on each chapter.  Notes will go home when the class is having a math test.

 

SCIENCE AND SOCIAL STUDIES - These subject areas are integrated into the Reading and Language Arts curriculum.  Students work on activities in class and during center time.
